清泉女子大学(日文・英文)1

It is worth noting that the modern history of Japanese children's literature began in the late nineteenth century when Western children's literature was often translated into Japanese. "Learn about the West" was one of the policies of the Japanese government, and learning from written texts was the first step of westernization in the educational system. As a result of this policy, Little Women, Heidi, and Anne of Green Gables were first introduced to Japanese readers in translation and were included in various collections of famous stories for boys and girls.
The translation process from one language into another yields some transformation. Sometimes the translators change the titles based on their beliefs about and prejudices toward the young readers of the day. This was the case when those three were translated into Japanese.
